The Organized Mess
Cleanliness is a virtue, but sometimes a little clutter may inspire your next great idea. Researchers at the University of Minnesota had people solve problems in either a clean room or a messy one ( I personally think better in a clean/organized environment, but some healthy (work) clutter helps me as well), they found that those in the untidy space came up with more creative solutions. "An orderly room encourages people to do what is expected, but a messy room, they claim, does the opposite-leading you to brainstorm more innovative ideas," says Kathleen Vohs, Ph.D. The next time books and papers get stacked up, cut yourself some slack. The mess may encourage a light bulb moment (Good Housekeeping, December 2013).
