A diet rich in carotenoids and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables is known to give skin an appearance that resembles a sun tan. A sun tan predominately darkens skin with only very small changes in red and yellow pigmentation, whereas carotenoid coloration darkens skin only slightly while substantially increasing red and yellow tones, explains Carmen E. Lefvre, a psychology researcher at Leeds University Business School in England.
Eating about three and a half additional servings a day of foods high in carotenoids (which include carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, dark leafy greens and tomatoes) for six weeks is sufficient to change skin tone (Allure, April 2015).
