The skin is the largest and most complex (with the exception of the brain). It wraps the adult body in about 20 sq.ft of tissue, weighing some seven pounds; microscopic oil wells and geysers, structures that waterproof and prevent entrance of bacteria and harmful materials from the outside and nerve endings that whisk electrical messages of pain or cold/heat to the brain. For example, there are chemicals that make Vitamin D with the assistance of the sunshine. There are structures that excrete and others that participate in the production of antibodies against foreign proteins. The skin is an early warning system for a physical diagnosis, giving a clue of a systemic disease. Associations between the skin and the mind (stress) are intimate and complicated. For instance, a kind of emotion that is expressed as a blush-a rush of blood to the face (Samuel M. Bluefarb, M.D.).
