What is Comfort?
Desiring relief from pain and hardship is natural, but the bigger issue is learning how to benefit from the experience by turning to the Lord and receiving His encouragement vs. people.
What is comfort? The New Testament word means to encourage or come along side. Jesus promised to send a "Comforter" when He was near the end of His earthly ministry (John 14:16,26). The Holy Spirit comes to live within us and walk alongside us through life's challenges. He enlightens, quiets our fears, lightens the load, lifts our spirits, eases our pain, and invigorates us when we think we can't take another step.
The Holy Spirit has all the power of Almighty God because He is the third member of the Trinity. Every aspect of our lives is included in the Spirit's ministry. Although we may not always feel His presence, He is always teaching, guiding, leading, strengthening, and encouraging us (Sermon Notes, "A Cry for Comfort," Charles Stanley).
