Slippery Elm is a tree, the inner bark (not the whole) is used as medicine.
It is taken for coughs, sore throats, colic, diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, (IBS) Irritable Bowel Syndrome, bladder and urinary tract infections; it is also used for Syphilis, Herpes, and expelling tape worms.
Slippery Elm protects stomach ulcers for colitis, diverticulitis, GI inflammation, and too much stomach acid.
Warning: it can be taken by mouth to cause an abortion--consult your Doctor ( it aids in relieving labor).
When applied to skin, its used for wounds, gout, toothaches, burns, and rheumatism, etc. It contains chemicals that soothe sore throats and can cause mucous secretion, which is helpful for stomach and intestinal issues (WebMd).
