Society generally recognizes that some women are not frail creatures that can hardly exit the front door without a man to guide them. There's nothing wrong with the continuing custom that allow a man to extend social amenities and instinctive consideration to a woman he is with.
In some circumstances, a woman precedes a man through the door when the couple walks together. He would go ahead of her to open the door as a gentleman should. A man rarely offers his arm to a woman to escort her; however, some still do.
A man should not grab a woman by the elbow or the arm to shove her along. It's only when he is helping her into a car, bus, or taxi that he should put his hands under her elbow. He may also take her hand and precede her through a crowd to clear a path for her (Emily Post's, Etiquette, Harper Collins Publishers, 1992).
